the hawi top story

Pretty freaking summer awesome huh? I’m not so sure about #hotgirlsummer but this is a contender for #crochetgirlsummer am I right? am I RIGHT??

The travelling leaf stitch that I used for my Liula pattern has been used by the great people at We Are Knitters to create this amazing off-the-shoulder Hawi Top, part of their summer cotton crochet collection 2019. I was gifted this kit by @weareknitters and had decided that it was going to be this year’s school summer holiday project - it turned out that this is one of many school summer holiday projects but more on that in later blog posts!

I love the stitch, you probably know that already, I really like the way leaves start and end in a continuous fashion and it always feels like such a relaxing, and exciting, pleasure to crochet.

I was so pleased to get the chance to use it again and to make something completely different with it too.

The top is made using The Cotton yarn and it is lovely, have you ever used it? Butter soft, aran weight and easy to work with, although a bit splitty every now and again especially at the beginning and end of a ball. However, this Copper colourway totally makes up for any spiteful splittiness, I am head over heels for it and have been experimenting with the colour a bit, seeing what it looks good with and I’m currently living for it with red. Copper and red is a big fat YES from me right now.

The kit comes with everything you’ll need to make the Hawi Top including the yarn, pattern, hook and a wool needle for sewing in those ends. The pattern is rated as advanced and I would agree with that, the instructions are very (very) basic and the main body of the top is just charted so you have plenty to figure out yourself which I personally like but I get that many other people probably wouldn’t.

DETAILS

I worked the small/medium version of the pattern which comes up fairly large, I am a UK size 12 and it swamps me. I used the Copper colourway in We Are Knitters The Cotton yarn and a 5mm hook. The top is made in four pieces (front, back and two sleeves), and seamed together afterwards. The kit is available to buy from @weareknitters for £69.

It took me about three weeks to make, bearing in mind that I have many (many) other projects on the go and a six year old child to look after, I reckon it could easily be made in a day, day and a half, if you have lots of time and no children to feed, entertain, wash, cuddle :)

Hope your summer is going well, happy hooking yo!
